These hammocks are made using a similar “Sprang Woven” technique as the Mayan hammocks. Woven with a weather-resilient material along with a tighter 3 strings/loop vs 1, these are our #1 selling hammocks on Maui as they are better for the outdoor elements.
Scattered throughout Northern Thailand are villagers that have traditionally relied on farming as a way of life. With growing expenses resulting from modern life, traditional farming has proven to be insufficient. Hammock weaving is a good way for many disadvantaged people in the region to earn extra income when they are not farming. Fair pay at the pace they want. They are their own boss, and they set their own hours. It's a win win situation for everybody involved. Each weaver is responsible to supply their own yarn and set up. Some patterns are made to order while most patterns are up to the weavers imagination, which is what we prefer. Creating some of the most unique hammock color combinations imaginable. Enjoy your hammock knowing you're helping others across the horizon.
The History
It all started with a small group of about 300 nomadic people from the jungles of northern Thailand called the Mlabri (Forest People)
Known only as a myth for centuries, since they were never seen and the only traces left behind of their existence were their abandoned huts covered in yellow leaves they became known as “Phi Tong Leung” or “ghosts of yellow leaves”.
With over-hunting & the teak wood industry striping away the forests. The Mlabri were forced out of their natural habitat and forced into the ‘civilised world”.
With years of help from a missionary named Eugene who prevented the exploitation of this delicate group of people, and later on, a motorbike enthusiast named Peter who would introduce a Mayan technique of how to make the worlds finest hammocks The Mlabri social project would go on to be one of the most successful social projects in southeast Asia. Weaving hammocks to help supplement their income without sacrificing their traditional lifestyle and farming practices.

Mayan hammocks make a great addition as indoor furniture or to replace a bed in many homes throughout Mexico. These hammocks are woven with a Cotton Bed and Nylon End Lines are not designed to left outside for prolonged use. If you take these hammocks down after each use, you will extend the life of the hammock significantly
The quality begins with the thread used to weave these hammocks. Working with families that manufacture all the string used by the Mayans who weave the hammocks, who are responsible for approximately 3-5 miles of string used in each hammock. That being said, there is no other company in the market that has this degree of quality control.
From the factory the string goes to over 500 families in the Yucatan country-side who carry out the hand weaving process. Working with many of the same families for several generations, each earning a fair wage while keeping their tradition alive. When the weaving is complete (3-5 days, depending on the size) the hammocks are brought to the center of Merida, Mexico for a final inspection. From there they are shipped to Maui, Hawaii to be offered by Hangloose Hammocks Hawaii. From start to finish we guarantee the most ethically sourced Mayan hammocks with the highest quality and comfort available.
